1971 First Edition In the Night Kitchen
This is a first UK edition of In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak. Published in 1971 by The Bodley Head: London. This is a wonderfully illustrated book, in which "Sendak's hero Mickey falls through the dark into the Night Kitchen where three fat bakers are making the morning cake. So begins an intoxicating dream fantasy, described by the artist himself as 'a fantasy ten feet deep in reality'." Bound in pictorial boards which are in good-very good condition. There is some slight rubbing to the tail edge and to the head and tail of the spine, and some bumping to the top right corner, but otherwise good. The pages are very good. There is some light age toning and a couple of faint brown marks to the front free end paper, but they are otherwise lovely and clean. Complete with unclipped dust jacket which is also in good condition. There is some wear to the edges and a few areas of light soiling. There is also something written in green on the edge of the front flap - I have included a photograph of this for accuracy. Unpaginated. 18.5cm x 22.5cm. Comes with protective wrap. "Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn, New York. He began by illustrating other authors' books for children, but the first book that he both wrote and illustrated was Kenny's Window, published in 1956. In his lifetime, he illustrated over 80 books, and received many awards, including the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are. In 1970 he was the first American to win the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator's Medal. He passed away in May 2012."
