Schreiner, a South African, presents female experience within a colonial setting, and she questions ideas about gender, marriage, politics, race and labour relations. She is now regarded as a pioneering feminist writer, who influenced New Woman novels of the 1880’s and 1890’s by writing about women who fought traditional marriage and gender roles.
