Rare and highly collectible. This is a stunning set of six volumes of The Works of Edgar Allan Poe. In the publisher's original full cloth binding featuring an elaborate gilt decoration to the spine. The gilt to the spine remains vibrant, making them a handsome set to display. Illustrated, with a frontispiece to each volume. Volume I has an additional six folding facsimile plates. Volumes II and IV both have an additional plate. Therefore, eight plates across all volumes and six folding facsimiles.
The boards to each volume are in very good condition, with some light rubbing/bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spine, and minor surface soiling. Volume I [Poems] has a strip down the front cover which is marginally lighter - please see the photograph provided. Volume IV has a minor dent to the front right edge. The contents are lightly age toned with some browning to the preliminary pages and endpapers. There is a handwritten name to the front free endpaper of volume II dated 1911.
Interestingly, the majority of the pages in these volumes are uncut. (The owner would cut the top of the page with a letter opening or knife once purchased, to enable reading). This has not been done, which has preserved the pages and is indicative of them not having been read.
