Beautiful and highly sought after edition. This late Victorian deluxe edition by The Gresham Publishing Company features a stunning Arts and Crafts gilt peacock feather design on a maroon leather spine, designed by the renowned late 19th and early 20th century book designer and artist, Talwin Morris. This edition was also illustrated by John H. Bacon and features a biographical introduction by William Keith Leask as well as the Preface by 'Currer Bell' (Charlotte Bronte) which featured in the first edition, published in 1847. Quarter bound in maroon leather with olive green boards. As shown in the images, there is scuffing, bumping and wear to the spine, particularly at the head and tail, and the leather to both the front and rear joints has cracked, with some loss of leather. Despite the wear to the leather, the gilt remains vibrant and bright, making it an extremely attractive addition to any bookshelf. The olive boards have some light soiling and bumping to the corners and edges, but are otherwise in good condition. This book remains solidly bound. Internally there is some sporadic foxing and the pages are age toned. There is some spotting to the pages edges which is visible when the book is closed. One small pencil mark to the preliminaries but otherwise no inscriptions.
