London; Bradbury and Evans; MDCCCXLVI (1846).This is a FIRST EDITION of one of Dickens' most famous Christmas Books in the original publisher's cloth. A beautiful copy with the advertisement for Oliver Twist in the second state, but the text in the very scarce state of lacking the single quote after 'Halloa' in pp.82 line 11 for which Smith only observed a single copy.
The Cricket on the Hearth, the third of Dickens's five Christmas books, was published on 20 December 1845, the title page postdated 1846. It proved very popular - Dickens's friend Forster recorded that it doubled the circulation of its predecessors. That is since recognized as an exaggeration, but it nonetheless quickly underwent two editions, and by January there were 17 stage adaptations in progress (Schlicke, p. 128).

Both boards securely attached, binding secure, without shelf lean. All edges gilt, very good or better. Collated as complete, including the half title and 2pp of advertisements.
There is a contemporary bookplate attached to front pastedown of the Rt Hon Sir John Rolt, an important figure in Victorian society.
