Containing a study of a series of noteworthy persons listed by places around London. Including accounts of those executed, murderers, literary figures, political and religious people, and others. A charming look into nineteenth century London and its associations.
Provenance: Ex Libris (Latin for 'from the library of') Charles Clarke of Graiguenoe Park near Holy Cross, County Tipperary (Burke's "Landed Gentry of Ireland" (1904) records the five sons of the Reverend Marshal Clarke (died 1833) and his wife, Elizabeth Hare. The youngest son, Charles, built Graiguenoe Park and married Sarah Otway Bland.)
Two volumes bound in blue cloth with blind stamping to the front and rear covers and an embossed design to the spine. The boards are in good condition - there is some rubbing and bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spine.
Volume II has a nick to the cloth of the rear board and both volumes have some light surface soiling. The endpapers to both volumes have a list of books on different subjects. Volume II has a bookplate for Charles Clarke of Tipperary. Volume I has an advertisement for a new edition of Shakespeare's Works in between the front pastedown and front free endpaper. Both volumes have ink initials facing the title page and also a sticker featuring a crest with the Latin phrase 'Per Fidem Robur' (Strength through Faith)
The contents are age toned with some occasional foxing/foxing, but overall they are clean and in very good condition.
