This is a beautiful and rare edition of The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1891 by Adam & Charles Black.

The binding was designed by the distinguished American book designer Albert Angus Turbayne, who moved to England in 1890. It was produced in the early stages of Turbayne’s career, and features the monogram that he used to sign his bindings before the ‘scarab’ monogram that we are more familiar with today. The jagged thistle design, a nod to the author’s Scottish roots, is to me much bolder than his later design, in which the leaves are softened and more stylised.

Bound in blue/green cloth with a vibrant gilt thistle design and titling to the front cover and spine. The boards are in very good condition, with some light bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spine. There are some very light scuffs to the rear cover and spine. The gilt to the spine has also faded slightly when compared to the front cover. There is an ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Thepages are lightly age toned but remain clean and bright.

There are fewer copies of this edition available today, as Turbayne redesigned the cover and it was published again in 1898, this time in a green cloth with a much softer thistle design. I personally think this design is far more striking!

This book weighs 820g without packaging.
