1918 First Ed. The Springtide of Life: Poems of Childhood by Algernon Swinburne
This is a lovely copy of The Springtide of Life: Poems of Childhood by Algernon Charles Swinburne. First edition, published in 1918 by William Heinemann: London. Size 10" x 8" Bound in the original publishers green cloth with gilt lettering and design to the front cover and spine. The gilt to the spine has faded more than the front cover. The boards are in good condition. There is some bumping to the edges and corners, and a few marks/scuffs to the boards. There is also wear to the head and tail of the spine, as shown in the photographs. The front joint feels a little tender, though the pages remain firmly bound. There is some age toning to the pages and some foxing/browning throughout, though mostly to the endpapers, which have an attractive floral design in green. There is an ink inscription dated 1920m and a name written below it, in biro. With eight stunning full page colour illustrations by Arthur Rackham. All plates are present and in lovely, bright condition, protected by captioned tissue guards. The author: Algernon Charles Swinburne (5 April 1837 – 10 April 1909) was an English poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He wrote several novels and collections of poetry such as Poems and Ballads, and contributed to the famous Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica. The illustrator: Arthur Rackham RWS (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognized as one of the leading literary figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolor, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator. Overall a lovely copy of a scare and highly collectable book.
